In Key West chickens and roosters walk around wild. They are everywhere.   It is against the law to kill one of these birds.  According to the wise internet, when the population gets out of control and the predatory hawks migrate out of town, Key West Wildlife Center will loan residents a humane chicken trap to collect unwanted birds.  Once caught the resident brings the chickens to the center.  There they are provided care and sent off to various farms on the mainland.  On the mainland, they are prized for their eggs and go to work as "organic pest control" workers.  

"The Cock Walk" and "Yes, Honey" - SOLD

I love roosters, the attitude, the colors and the tail feathers.  I could not help myself naming one "Yes, Honey"----sometimes the hen lets the rooster strut.

Good Mornin' Handsome - SOLD

I live in a city but there is a house somewhere nearby that has roosters because I hear this guy crowing every morning when I am out walking my dog Max.  Research on why roosters crow done by Takashi Yoshimura found that roosters settled into a 23.8 hour day and would begin crowing the same time every day, just before dawn and the lighting did not seem to factor in.  It was concluded that the birds must have an internal body clock that tells them when to crow.  Another interesting observation was that the most dominate rooster was the one who start the crowing off, lending credence to the idea that crowing is about marking territory and asserting dominance. the researcher said, "Our preliminary data suggest that the highest ranked rooster has priority in breaking the dawn and lower ranking roosters are patient enough to wait and follow the highest ranked rooster each morning."

Just a Rooster in Paradise -SOLD

I have been traveling every week with my job with very little time to paint but I am always taking photos and trying to keep my file of potential paintings full.  I recently spent several days in Key West.  It is a beautiful place full of color, artists, street entertainers and a lot of color.  Roosters walk around freely and they have the most unusual colors.  I took several pictures and had plans to paint one of these guys.  This week the Daily Paintworks challenge was to paint a painting using your non dominant hand........this is really hard but I like the results.  Let me know what you think of this loose interpretation of a Key West rooster.

A Rooster Named Ricky - SOLD

I loved this colorful picture that I found by Villager Jim.  Villager Jim is an awesome photographer who graciously shares his photos on Paint My Photo.  The man is amazing.  I am moved each time I look at his work.  All of his subjects are full of life, light, color and emotion.  I hope you like this rendition of his rooster named Ricky.
